Ethical Coaching - My Standards Your Confidence

I abide by the Global Code of Ethics.

It is a comprehensive framework designed to maintain and promote excellent practice and ethical principles within the coaching, mentoring, and supervision professions.

The Code aligns with the Professional Charter for Coaching and Mentoring and serves as a guidance document, setting expectations for best practice and professional excellence rather than being legally binding.

Its core purpose is to provide clear guidelines, accountability, and standards of conduct for members, outlining how they are expected to behave and perform when working with clients and interacting with fellow practitioners, sponsors, and stakeholders.

The Code also guides professional development and growth and serves as a basis for addressing complaints or disciplinary actions.

A significant portion of the Code is dedicated to standards for Working with Clients, covering crucial aspects like contracting, integrity, confidentiality, appropriate interactions, conflicts of interest and ending professional relationships.

Before commencing work, members must make the Code available, explain their commitment to it, and ensure clients and sponsors are aware of the respective bodies' complaints procedures. They must clearly explain the terms of the contract, including financial and confidentiality arrangements, striving to understand client expectations and being transparent about their methods.

Maintaining strict confidentiality is paramount, with clear agreements on limits to confidentiality and secure storage of client data in compliance with relevant laws. Coaches are required to be suitably qualified, honestly represent their credentials, avoid misleading claims, attribute others' work appropriately, and disclose any conflicts of interest, agreeing to withdraw if a conflict cannot be managed effectively.

Setting and maintaining clear, appropriate boundaries, and avoiding romantic or sexual relationships with current clients or sponsors is also a key requirement.

Beyond direct client work, the Code details expectations for Professional Conduct and Excellent Practice. Coaches are expected to behave in a way that reflects positively on the profession, demonstrating respect for diverse practices and ethically informed approaches, including the use of technology and AI.

This includes abiding by policies on equality, diversity, inclusion, social responsibility, and climate change, actively working to avoid discrimination and bias, and constructively challenging inappropriate behaviour in others.

Adherence to relevant legal and statutory obligations, including safeguarding legislation. Members must operate within their professional competence, be fit to practice, and engage in regular supervision with suitably qualified supervisors to discuss ethical dilemmas and enhance practice.

Continuous professional development (CPD) is essential for developing competence, contributing to the professional community, and reflecting on the quality of their work.

Professional responsibilities, including maintaining confidentiality, continue even after the client relationship has ended.
